Colonial Gardens was quiet. It seemed clean and very nicely decorated. It seemed to have adequate staff. They named a lot of different activities that they had for the people, but I really didn't see much of anything going on. So I would have to go back another time and ask them about why when I came to look at the place, nothing was going on when they said all kinds of stuff was scheduled. That's the only thing I have a little bit of concern about. They had activity rooms, but I didn't see anybody doing anything except laying around sleeping. The rooms seemed to be very nicely arranged. They had bathing facilities that were very well set up to properly care for people who needed help. They had different areas where people could sit to enjoy either TV or to do some sort of craft project. They also had an outdoor area where people could go if they so desired. It wasn't very shady, but there was an outdoor area where they could just get out and enjoy the outdoors. Everybody was very polite, pleasant, and professional.

The rooms are very nice - the staff is outstanding - they are observant and know when a resident needs a little extra attention, whether it’s just to talk to them or walk with them. Family and friends can visit at any time. The residents have freedom to interact with staff and other residents. There are activities every day - just recently they had outings to the Zoo and the State Fair. They have a beautiful courtyard where the residents can go to enjoy fresh air. The menu is varied and my loved one enjoys the food. I would highly recommend Colonial Gardens as a good choice for anyone looking for memory care for their loved one.
Read moreBased on our experience with the community, It is time to update the carpeting and reupholster the chairs in the common areas. However the staff members at Colonial Gardens seems to be caring about the residents.

We were so impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and how much the staff seemed to care. However, reality has not been as good as promised. We’ve found mom looking at her food with no one prompting her to eat. Memory care patients very often need cues to perform simple tasks like eating. Most of the time her teeth are not brushed. At times when we drop by in the morning, she will still be in bed. No one gets her up for breakfast. I don’t know if she would get a meal if we didn’t come by and get her dressed. Weekends are the worst due to staffing levels. Sometimes she doesn’t get her meds. We thought a facility would provide better care than what she was able to get at home, but we were wrong.

Went to visit my husband and each time it was the same. Clean, and aides and nurses around. Also, they call each patient by name. And answered my questions concerning my husband in a knowledgeable way. They are still people to them, not just nameless patients. My only real complaint was I was not informed concerning the upfront $[removed] community fee. It was a surprise for me the day I brought my husband in. Quite a costly surprise. I did not understand what the purpose of that fee was and didn't ask because mentally I was not all there the day of admission. I would recommend Colonial Gardens to others looking.

Colonial Gardens was large, well structured, and well maintained. In general, it was a very nice facility. They seemed to have a lot of activities. It was a large facility. They had a lot of residents. I didn't observe them actually keeping all of the residents busy when I was there. It was also memory care, so they had a lot of residents just wandering around. The one thing that wasn't suitable for us was the double rooms or shared rooms. They didn't have single rooms at that time. Overall, it was nice. They just didn't have what we were looking for.
