I visited Royal Oaks. During this visit to Royal Oaks, we began to understand what the parameters were to look for. One of the most important things that I discovered as you're going through these places, as you're seeing other residents and having some minimal interaction, in most of the places we saw, the people who live there just didn't look or sound happy. They would usually have sort of a grumpy look on their face, and they didn't seem to be happy with life. When we walked into Royal Oaks, the people who were residents there looked happy. They had smiles, they would wave at you and say, "Hello, how are you?" I feel that is something that comes from the operational management, that they interact with their residents in a manner that the residents liked being there. In almost six of the seven places we saw, the people just looked like they were an institutional statistic. The person who gave me the tour was wonderful. The units we looked at all have, at the minimum, a kitchenette, which is fine. Some of them have full kitchens. But we didn't have any of their food. The older buildings have been well-upgraded and maintained. It was a clean, pretty place.

We are presently trying out Royal Oaks. My father is doing a trial day this week. It was beautiful and very kept up, very nice, very high class, and seemed more like a resort environment. We chose a studio. It was a good fit for him because he's a single man who liked the idea of having all his meals taken care of. That was a big plus for him. We are having a meal there tonight. He liked the heated pool, the putting course, the fitness center, and some of the musical activities, or musical performances and things. I only had contact with the initial one who did our tour, she was awesome, and she's been great at working with us getting ready for the visit.

We went to the Royal Oaks over a year ago. We didn't have a meal, but we met several residents there. They were very friendly, and they seemed very happy there. The environment was very welcoming. We saw some people sitting around, and we talked with some folks that were there. We didn't see any activities. The amenities seem to be good. Their workout room (which is important to us) and the exercise room seems to be pretty good. It's good sized, and their grounds are very well maintained.

We did an in-person tour of Royal Oaks. It's a nice community. Everything is up and downhill at Royal Oaks, so we have to walk just about to everything. That's the thing we didn't want to do. That's the reason why we didn't consider Royal Oaks. I think the staff was excellent. And it's more apartment than individual units, and we didn't want to be in an apartment facility. We didn't try the food because when we visited it the dining room was closed.

My mother lived at Royal Oaks for the last 10 years of her life(95 years young). Facilities are well kept, particularly when any flu or cold is going around. Royal Oaks reacted immediately to the current Crisis. All residence are given food in their room eliminating "groups". I recently had to take paper work to a client who is living there. They took my temperature, made me wear gloves/mask and fill out a health report. The fact that they have 3 levels of care is great! My mother had to use all 3, but she did not have to move to an unfamiliar place. She knew the grounds, the hairdresser and the staff. The staff, what a lovely group of people. The "kids" serving in the dining room are particularly polite, and most helpful. The ground are gorgeous, food is delicious and the staff is most caring and helpful. I have visited many retirement homes in the San Gabriel Valley, Royals Oaks is The Best!
