We placed a family member in The Charlotte AL in 2021. Nice facility with lovely interiors. The family member brought potential challenges, but we were confident she would acclimate well. Almost immediately, there were growing problems. The accounts of what we personally saw and heard from the family member and the staff differed significantly. Inconsistencies seemed to abound. We were making calls to the County Ombudsman, who was familiar with the Executive Director. Eventually, we had to get outside help to have her placed in another facility. We learned the hard way about 'State Scores' in AL facilities. It was a stressful, unpleasant and expensive process.

Had heard very promising feedback from friends whom have family or had them at The Charlotte in the past. Seemed the day we visited for the tour that you could tell staffing was short handed or staff had not shown up for the day. The facility needed a deep cleaning and had that smell that everyone thinks of when dealing with elderly residents. Just felt it could use some deep cleaning and refreshing otherwise everything seemed very nice.

Dining room has been closed off and on due to staffing issues. Activities offered include bingo, holiday parties, etc. They had a price raise of 10% since the beginning of 2022. That was a large increase. Hopefully, they can bring in more staff with the increase alone. Make sure you ask marketing about the increase. We were told 3% increase. It ended up 10%. The only issue we had was their pharmacy. Our loved ones bill was done on a 30 day basis versus getting her medicine every 90 days outside of the facility. I would check around for pharmacy options due to blister packs, etc. All in all 9/10. They worked hard to get her qualified for her insurance. They have dermatologist comes to see her, pediatrist, she goes to the beauty shop their, physical therapy, etc.

I think they're doing the best they can. But part of the problem is my parents started in December, which was right before that big Omicron Covid outbreak. So there have been a lot of challenges, including turnover in staffing, which creates problems. The residents are not being cared for consistently by the same people, and I think my parents likely would have adjusted better had that not been the case. Also cleanliness has been an issue in the residents' rooms - again due to Covid - although the common spaces are fine. And my parents do like the food.
Read moreI like the Charlotte because I have a nice apartment, the people are kind, the staff are helpful and nice. The food is good. It's better than living at home because here people do things for me. I would recommend it.
