Poet's Walk Leesburg is a very nice place and the memory care unit is one of the best. They facility is very clean and they do a great job with that. The staff are friendly and helpful. Overall it has been a pretty good experience for us.

We have had a number of negative experiences since we first signed on. We were told that there was no staff turnover since it was built. From our first day there the staff turnover began. Our ambassador was asked to leave and we consequently never even had our initial introduction. Never found out when laundry day was. There were caretaker meetings we didn't even know about. We had trouble finding someone to help with initial set up type questions. We were promised frequent communication and that has consistently been an issue. My loved one has even been put on medicine without our knowledge. They promised all sorts of ways they monitor the residents. My loved ones bed sensor was never installed, no one could ever answer my question about how much fluid she was passing, and one night she was up most of the night vomiting and diarrhea and no one checked on her, nope did they tell us she was sick. Another time she slept in another residents room all night and no one even noticed.

The facility is clean, well-appointed, airy and secure, with several activity areas in the main room, a big community TV and a cage of live birds. Room furnishings are the resident's, and any room TV or telephone must be purchased, contracted and maintained individually, with no technical assistance in the building. (I got both for my 81 yr old wife, but she can't operate TV or answer the phone without help.) Focus on memory care is evident and staff and programs are good. However, assistance in dressing, bathing, eating, grooming is spare. My wife has been sent to join the main area with her slacks or shirt on backwards, inside out or unbuttoned...in her stocking feet. Her clothes are all over. The food is passable, occasionally good, but short on fresh vegetables, fruit. Milk is never offered. Staff is friendly, helpful but too few. I visited on a Saturday abd there were no ...ZERO... staff of any kind visible in any hall or space. Management promises improvements in these areas.

There's not enough staff. The individuals that are there are good, and they care. But there's just not enough of them. The food is not great. Some of it is just not appropriate for some of the memory care residents, and there's not enough staff to help cut up the food or help them eat. I know that's a universal problem right now during the pandemic. I know they're having a difficult job in hiring, but that is the crux of their issues right now. They do have a variety of activities, things like trivia, bouncing a balloon around, playing little ball games. My loved one doesn't participate with any consistency, but the staff certainly tries to get him involved. I do pay a caregiver out of pocket to be with my loved one five hours a day so that he gets personal care. That's over and above their staffing Their weekend staff is absolutely unsatisfactory. They do not have enough people on the weekends. Again, the staff that's there is good. There's just not enough of them. They just got a new director. I'm really hoping they will make the necessary changes and that things will improve.
