Live with Purpose at Sunrise at Bonita
When you walk into the Sunrise at Bonita assisted living facility, the first thing you’ll notice is the bright, cheery atmosphere. It’s not just the skylights, the big windows and the sunny enclosed porch, either. The spirit of the staff, the creative activities, and the furry four-legged residents make this such a joyful place to be. Through Sunrise’s Live With Purpose program, seniors here have a wide range of options for activities. These include creative outlets like art classes and live performances, chances to learn a new language or skill, physical exercises for healthy bodies and community service opportunities to nourish the soul. Residents get out into the Chula Vista community regularly, with scheduled trips to Westfield Plaza Bonita, the Pacific beaches, Rohr Park and the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center. It’s near some of the area’s best medical facilities, including Scripps Mercy Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista Hospital and Kaiser Bonita Medical Offices and Pharmacy.
Dining is a highlight at Sunrise at Bonita. Head chef Unika Ivory prepares diverse dishes to please the multicultural community; residents say their favorite is her pan-seared cod with white wine butter garlic sauce. Unika and her team can make dishes that meet unique dietary restrictions, including pureed, vegetarian, no-sugar and low-sodium. She holds chef chats every week to get feedback and take requests, and she loves hosting the monthly Family Nights, where visiting family members get to taste a unique dish. Every Independence Day, Sunrise at Bonita hosts a big family barbecue with the works (complete with homemade ice cream).
Choose Your Level of Care
Sunrise at Bonita offers three assisted living floor plans: studios, one-bedrooms and Companion Suites; the latter allows two residents to share expenses in a two-bedroom apartment. All floorplans come with kitchenettes, maid service, laundry, 24/7 staff assistance and Sunrise CareConnect, a personalized health record system.
Residents with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia can choose an apartment in the Reminiscence Neighborhood, where they enjoy special assistance with daily activities like bathing, grooming, eating, continence and medication management. Life Enrichment Managers trained in dementia care help residents and their families create an individualized care plan that includes physical exercise, socialization and cognitive training.

There are all kinds of activities for them. They sing, dance, and do gardening; they do all kinds of things. The staff is well-mannered and trained, and they pretty much know what to do. They have a patio. They have gardening and a place where you can book a picnic area. They have a very friendly staff. They were accommodating and take care of my dad very well. I did not taste the food, but I know they do a very good job of having fresh items.

Sunrise of Bonita didn't seem like there was enough staff. Especially with memory care, what if someone walked out of their room or locked out the door? They did have the alarm systems, but it just didn't feel like there was a good presence of staff. The rooms are small, but they don't need to be big. They had like a sunroom, so there were people just kind of sitting, but nobody was engaging with them.
Read moreSunrise of Bonita was HORRIBLE. They had one room available, which was run down & dirty, besides being tiny. It has one tiny windows that looked out over a private property that was basically a junkyard. Their prices are astronomical!
I would advise that when doing the intake process, you should get into details about what expectations you have. If there is specific equipment/special needs, specify what that equipment is.

I really liked Sunrise of Bonita. It was close to home, and a small community like we were looking for. It would have been a good choice. But their cost was on a sliding scale depending on the level of care needed, so they would have been a little outside of our budget as our loved one's health care needs progressed. But their staff was so helpful and nice. They really worked with me to see if we could make it work and were very gracious when in the end it truly was outside of our budget.
