Brighton Gardens of West Orange was fabulous. However, the rates were kind of bad if you needed help. The only thing I had a problem with was the extra $4,000 a month if Mom needed assistance with taking a shower. I liked everything else about it. I loved the whole thing. I toured the memory care. The lady took me through and showed me everything. The other thing I had a problem with was they have two cats. The restaurant was gorgeous. The common areas, too. They would go outside and the grounds were beautiful. They have a place where they could do the gardening right there. The whole thing was just beautiful. I thought it was gorgeous. It was near a hospital so that's a very good location and it's not in a busy street.

Our experience with Brighton Gardens wasn't very good. My brother felt they were not responsive. My father felt they did not welcome him and left him on his own too much and were not inviting him to the various programs. He fell a lot was sent out to hospital and after one 2-night observation stay, the physician told my brother that he felt my dad needed rehab. My dad died. All in all, neither my brother nor my daughter would recommend Sunrise. It was not what was promised.

I visited Brighton Gardens of West Orange. I didn't like the fact that it had been a hotel, and the rooms were even smaller. Their activities for assisted living were nice. The place was a little bit brighter, with sunshine wise, and so forth. But it's off of a major road that is heavily traveled. Even though they're down the hill a little bit, a driveway type of hill, I was more concerned about, if she started walking and got lost or she didn't realize where she was for some reason, with or without being in memory care. Things happen, and I was afraid she would not be able to navigate the area if that were to happen. They can come and go more easily; they don't have it locked. The staff all seemed nice during the tour. It has that road out front and smaller rooms, it's not what I would have preferred. They're closer to my home so I can get to it easier in the wintertime. It's on that busy street and has no locked door. Makes it more difficult to put my sister in good conscience in it. They need to put locks on the door, or a locking system.
