We like Bickford of West Des Moines. The only thing that we would be careful about is, on one side of the memory unit is that the windows face a wall outside and we wouldn't do that, and then the other side faces a courtyard, so we would be very careful about what room we got if we went there. Otherwise, it was fine. They had a little center area for memory care if you want to sit out there and there's a community refrigerator. The rooms were of a decent size. I think that the staff members are competent, and they were paying attention to what was going on. Their dining room and menus were fine, too. The place was very well kept up and clean.

I met with the Sales Director (Taylor) and the facility nurse. Both were very pleasant and extremely accommodating. The facility is a little smaller than some of the newest ones, but also appears to be more intimate. What I really appreciated were the online reviews posted to their website. Most of the reviews were positive but a few were critical, and Bickford did not remove them. When I asked about that strategy, I was told that they felt it was necessary to be honest and transparent with potential tenants, and I was then told how they addressed each complaint

Bickford of West Des Moines was very well kept up. Their staff was very professional and very accommodating. It was Taylor that gave me the tour. She was very helpful and followed up with me. She was very good. They had activities from bingo games to bowling. The list they had was very active and it would keep the residents very busy or at least attentive. The whole facility was very well kept up and very clean. It was a very nice presentation overall.

Bickford of West Des Moines had a very secure memory care. The place seemed to be very clean. We were very impressed with the person who runs the place. She's a nurse. The very few people that we saw seemed to be OK with the place. They provide them with three good meals a day, and exercises for those who want to. They also have a nice locked down outside area that they can be in. The tables in the dining area were placed well so that you could get the wheelchairs around, and there were enough windows to light the room up.

My tour at Bickford of West Des Moines was nice. It had more of a nursing home feel to it, that's what we didn't like about it so much. The one-bedroom we saw was nice and spacious. There's also another one-bedroom that wasn't as big, and then they had the suite which seemed bigger than the small one-bedroom. The staff members were all nice and they answered our questions. They would help with her pills and stuff, and they served the meals restaurant-style. They had entertainment and they had some exercise stuff, but they didn't have church services.
