We had done our best to keep my mom in her own home and independent, with assistance from me. She suffers from dementia. But a few weeks ago I saw on our WIFI cams that she had fallen. I was there in minutes and after two stays in the hospital and a few weeks in rehab, I decided that she needed to be in a "safe" facility. I checked many of the assisted living facilities in our area that offered Memory Care for dementia patients. One of my clients mentioned she had recently place her husband in American House in Zephyrhills and she was pleased with the care he was receiving. I called them and met with Keaton who has a great positive attitude. She took the time to give me a tour and explain how things worked in the "secured" wing where the persons with dementia would live. After coming from rehab and its more nursing home feel, American House seemed more like a hotel or college campus setting. They have a huge common area that is always supervised, a huge TV for viewing, activities to stimulate both mind and body, etc. They also have a cafe where their meals are taken. I only wish my menu at home was as nice as theirs. And I can join her for lunch or dinner if I like! I don''t have to worry about medication management since that is included in the fees in the memory care unit. My mother has her own large corner room with plenty of natural light and we moved in her own familiar furniture so she would feel at home. There is a large bathroom nearby that she shares will just one other lady. And to be honest, she has NEVER begged me to "take her home", like she did when in the hospital and rehab. She gets the mental stimulation of interacting with the staff and the other residents. And Terry, the Life Enrichment Coordinator, makes sure they have lots of activities to keep them occupied and enjoying their lives. They also have a pleasantly shaded terrace where they get fresh air and enjoy our Florida weather. All in all, I am very pleased with the atmosphere at American House and its staff. Keaton, Jackie, Terry, Gabe, Brandon, Jessica, and the others, whose names I have not learned yet, have been great and given me a lot of peace of mind. I can now relax and enjoy my own retirement (at 69) knowing mom is in a safe environment with good people looking after her care!

They have a big library and a big theater. They can go and get snacks if they want their snacks. They have a salon and a barber shop in there. You could either get a good-sized room and put a twin-size bed in there, and you have a little kitchen. They also put the microwave in there. The staff who took me around was very nice. She took me all around. I don't see anything bad about that place at all. It surprised me because normally you'd see something. The people were sitting down in the living room by the fireplace. It seemed like they were all happy in there. The landscaping was nice.

What I liked least about American House Zephyrhills was the price. It was too expensive. It was on a bigger, more grand scale. The location was good. The staff was very nice and welcoming. However, my mother can't afford it, and they don't take Medicare. It's only private funding, so that's a big problem. They had an area for stay-in-place exercise for those who couldn't get around much, but could get some exercise. They had bingo and movies. They had a movie room with movie chairs. It was a miniature theater room set-up, which was cool. But it's also more expensive. It's fancier, larger, and more expensive. The place seemed a little more worn down. There's a little bit older feel.
