My mother is in American House Macedonia. What I like best is the staff to resident ratio is higher than most places. She's always kept clean. I like the cleanliness of the place, and their attentiveness seems to be high. There is no offensive smell when you walk in. The two things that concerned me, and I think one of them has been taken care of, is they had a high turnover rate of associates, and I think that may have slowed down. The other thing that concerned me was the cost. The cost is on the higher side, but you get what you pay for. The food isn't bad. They have a courtyard and community areas. When she first got there, they would bring a hairdresser in, and they did that for her. I don't know if they still have that. They have doctors that come in to check fingernails and toenails and stuff like that.

I remember watching this building be constructed and thinking how nice it was. Little did I know at the time that my mom would one day call it home. I’m grateful American House Macedonia is there. It doesn’t have the hospital feel that some facilities do. It’s like an apartment building staffed with 24 hour assistance. It has a theater with big screen TV and gaming console for Wii bowling; a pub where football games, bingo and other activities are enjoyed; a bistro for smaller gatherings; a library; a billiards table; an activities room on the third floor where crafts are frequently created; and a small private dining room off the main dining room for gatherings on site with friends or family. The two sided fireplace between the lobby and the dining room provides a cozy gathering place. Also, American House has a shuttle that the enthusiastic activities coordinator uses to provide regular opportunities for residents to enjoy trips out of the building. Last week, they went on a hayride at a farm in Peninsula, and this week they took a drive through the beautiful Bedford Reservation and stopped for ice cream at Park Place. Trips to local stores and restaurants are also part of the activities schedule. Mom has lived there for two years now. During that time, I have met many staff members from nursing, housekeeping, administration, dining room, physical therapy and activities. I have personally witnessed the caring and fun relationship many of them have with my mom — the kind of relationship that shows they really care and aren’t just doing a job. It is a great comfort to me to know that she has that kind of consistent support. I’ll say it again — I’m grateful American House Macedonia is there.

We had my mom in American House Macedonia. She was in the memory care unit there, but they totally ignored her, and that's why we took her out. It's a horrible, horrible place. They need to improve everything there from the management to the staff. They're understaffed. They were not clean. Even the public restrooms had fecal matter everywhere. Things were broken, and things were leaking. It's just awful there. I don't even think they should be open for business. With regards to food, they wouldn't give the residents napkins, utensils, or beverages. They just shove them at a table and leave them. They didn't care if they eat or not. It looked like they gave them hot dogs that looked like something that sat at 7-Eleven for a week or two. It was awful. In terms of physical appearance, the outside looked nice, but not once you got inside. It needed to be clean and upkept. My mom didn't do any activities there. They just left her in her room unattended. When you call the management with your concerns, you couldn't get through to them, and their voicemail was always full, so you couldn't even speak to anybody. It was awful.

There is an intense lack of impathy as well as communication. The New Executive Director is difficult to communicate with when she is in the building ( which is rare). She is argumentative, abrasive and dishonest and has even bring loved ones ans others to teats. The facility in not what it used to be, in gact it is disappointing, saddening and disgusting to see. All of the staffed who were pleasant, attentive and interactive are gone amd replaced with poor leadership throughout.
