Almond Heights Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Q: What is “senior living”? How is it different than a nursing home?
A: Senior living communities (like Almond Heights) are similar to nursing homes in many ways. Both communities offer long-term care for older adults who need help. Senior living communities specialize in non-medical personal care (like assistance with a person’s activities of daily living) and nursing homes primarily offer health care services. Nursing homes staff more registered nurses than an assisted living community or memory care unit and they are more technologically equipped to provide skilled nursing care.
Assisted living communities do not offer skilled nursing services, like catheter care or IV administration. Instead, they provide a safe, comfortable place for older adults to retire and enjoy luxury living as they receive personal care.
Q: How do I know if Almond Heights can meet my care needs (or my family member’s)?
A: Each Almond Heights applicant works with a care adviser to do a pre-admission assessment before they move in. Pre-admission assessments help the staff understand each applicant’s care needs better, helping them determine if the residence’s long term care programs are the right fit. If a pre-admission assessment indicates that Almond Heights’ memory care unit or assisted living program are not suitable for an applicant’s need, the care adviser can discuss alternative options with them to receive higher level care.
Q: Is Almond Heights Senior Living suitable for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease?
A: Living with Alzheimer’s disease can be challenging for both the individual and their families. Finding an exceptional Alzheimer’s care community can make an important difference in a person’s life, giving them a second chance at retirement. Almond Heights is well-equipped to help residents with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and short-term memory loss, thanks to their premier memory care retirement residence. The community is designed specifically for people who need Alzheimer’s care and the staff are experienced treating memory loss.
Alzheimer’s care residents receive assistance with their daily living activities as they would in the assisted living program. The memory care community’s caregivers tailor their treatments around memory loss, creating a nurturing environment for residents.
Q: Does Almond Heights offer short-term care programs?
A: Absolutely! In addition to Almond Heights’ long-term assisted living, independent living, and memory care services, older adults from throughout Orangevale are welcome to their respite care programs and adult day care services. Respite care and adult day care are exceptional alternatives to long-term care for older adults who receive care at-home. When their primary caregivers are away for any reason, they can schedule a stay at Almond Heights. Short-term residents are welcome to the same amenities as long-term community members and receive outstanding, compassionate care during their stay.
Q: Will my health insurance pay for Almond Heights?
A: Whether your health insurance will pay for Almond Heights depends on your health provider. Almond Heights is a community-based living facility, offering non-medical care. Some health care providers do not pay for non-medical care, but each plan is different. Medicaid recipients who receive a home and community-based services (HCBS) waiver may use their coverage to pay for Almond Heights, but interested applicants should speak with their case worker to learn more.
Prospective residents with long term care insurance may qualify for coverage, depending on their plan. Long term care insurance is widely available, and offers limitless benefits over private pay for senior living. Interested families should contact Almond Heights directly to learn more about their pay schedules, prices, and options for private pay residents.
Q: What social activities and community events does Almond Heights offer residents?
A: Almond Heights Senior Living and Memory Care believes staying active is the key to nurturing stronger seniors. In addition to their long term care programs, the residence offers a wide selection of fun amenities and events for residents.
The community sponsors free teaching events in the common rooms, where residents can listen to a lecture or take a class to learn a new skill. Residents can attend a community trivia game night, where they can answer questions about their favorite books, songs or TV series, or they can participate in a fitness class and learn a new chair yoga pose. The community’s events rotate, including beanbag baseball outside during the warm months, and residents are invited to movie night regularly in the on-site theater.
When residents want to spent time alone enjoying an independent activity, they can request coloring books from the caregivers or the activities assistant and unwind with creative expression. They are also welcome to enjoy a crossword puzzle if beanbag baseball isn’t their idea of fun, or enjoy their favorite TV series with a friend in one of the common rooms.
If residents feel under stimulated, they can speak with the activities assistant for help. The activities assistant guides residents in the right direction, helping them find fulfilling activities to fill their free time.
Q: Do I have to have a roommate when I live at Almond Heights? Can my spouse and I live in the same apartment?
A: Thanks to Almond Heights Senior Living and Memory Care’s 11 floor plans, there are plenty of bedroom units to choose from. No one is required to have a roommate, although some residents choose to as a way to alleviate the cost of care. Residents have a choice of studio, one and two-bedroom units when they move in, giving them direct control over their living environment. Each apartment has private bedroom and private baths, making it suitable for residents who want to live alone or have a roommate.
Spouses are welcome to live together if it they are both suitable in the same care program. To learn more, contact Almond Heights directly and speak with the senior living community’s care adviser.

It was like Applebee's. It was normal, but the dining area was nice. This facility would work fine for my parents, but it was too far away from us, and that's not the facility's problem.

My loved one is currently residing at Almond Heights Senior Living. They are not providing the care that we agreed on prior to moving my loved one in. They tried to raise her level of care as soon as she moved in, even though nothing had changed. They sent her to the hospital without letting me know until she was gone, and the hospital said there was no reason for her to have been sent there. I have been told that they won't give her anything that is not doctor prescribed, like vitamins or supplements, but the med techs say they do it all the time. Unorganized is not the correct word, but the head nurse and head caretaker seem to need to get on the same page with the staff. I was thinking about moving my loved one, but at her age, and her dementia is getting worse, I don't think she could handle that again.

I would highly recommend this facility to family and friends.

Almond Height's dedicated team, compassion for our families situation and understanding has been incredible. Both my sister and I work in senior living and found ourselves needing to find another community for our mom after the community she chose wasn't working out (failed promises). Both of us always say it's just different when it's your own parent and that is the case with us! With all of us kids having crazy busy lives the team walked us through everything in order to do a really quick move. Her apt is bright, cheery & a perfect size for her! She has joined the book club & has made friends. The community is warm and welcoming, this coupled with the professionalism and kindness of the staff has provided immense comfort to both my mom and us kids. Thank you Almond Heights for going above and beyond! As an MBK employee, I can say with lots of experience that this organization has an ethos like no other! It feels so good to work with and for MBK Senior Living!
Read moreAlmond Heights is my first experience with Senior Living. I have been Pleasantly Surprised by how warm and caring everyone on staff is. The Building and grounds are also very nice. The place is decorated nicely and it feels like a home not a facility.
