Aegis Gardens Fremont: Senior Living Steeped in Asian Culture
Aegis Gardens Fremont is a unique senior care community that offers a culturally authentic experience specifically for seniors of Asian descent. Every detail here has been carefully curated to honor familial traditions and cultural customs, from the design and decor to the food and the activities. The chefs here craft traditional Cantonese and Mandarin cuisines like preserved egg and minced pork porridge, shrimp with walnut, and roast duck. Residents paint, do calligraphy, play Mahjong, hold cribbage tournaments, and practice origami in the dedicated game and crafts room. What’s more, all staff members are bilingual, allowing residents to speak the language that feels the most comfortable.
Seniors at Aegis Gardens Fremont get out frequently to experience everything Fremont offers, including Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area, the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, Shinn Historical Park, and Arboretum. In addition, the community is just minutes from the San Francisco Bay, which offers the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and Alameda Creek Vista Point.

Like the common areas, the residences boast distinctive designs, elegant touches, and high-end decor. The prices for each apartment include housekeeping, laundry services, transportation, utilities, and three meals a day in the dining room.

My mom is happy and well-cared for at Aegis Gardens. Management and staff are friendly, respectful and responsive. Only complaint is that the daily cost of care and rent had increased multiple times in the 2.5 years she''s been at Aegis Gardens.
Aegis Gardens is an excellent assisted-living place for Chinese-speaking seniors who need high quality services. Besides room and board, they also provide activities that encourage both physical and mental development for the residents.

Aegis Gardens provides excellent care and keeps our mother safe, covid free and healthy. I honestly believe, had she stayed at another less culturally compatible assisted living, she would have contracted covid, fallen or possibly no longer be with us. We moved mom from a Western based Assisted Living in late February 2019, just 2 weeks before pandemic shut down because she wasn''t thriving. No one knew there would be a pandemic. It was difficult not seeing her as she adjusted to a new environment, but they kept us updated and her safe. I''m a physician in geriatric medicine and understand the importance of quality of life, appropriate levels of supervision and changing care needs. As a daughter of 90 years young mother and a Internist focused on elderly care, I give Aegis Gardens a big thumbs up. Being Chinese yet unable to keep our mom safe in our homes is difficult given our upbringing to keep them home. However, safety is most important. Many families do not realize that our loved ones age and their care needs progress. It is an ongoing partnership between the facility and family to ensure their loved one is in the most appropriate level of care in combination with the resident/family''s goals of care. These goals and needs change over time. Being a physician, I see how families may expect things to stay static and start to blame staff, facilities when it may be denial that their loved one is aging and requiring more care needs whether due to functional and/or cognitive decline. Aegis Gardens does a good job of assessing how the residents progress and adapt including if and when assisted living is no longer the best level of care. That is important for safety of residents and staff. For instance, mom kept falling after initial move in given her impulsive behavior and it became a concern if assisted living level (which is intermittent supervision and NEVER meant to imply 24 hours supervised care) was appropriate. We partnered with management and staff to work on different fall and safety precautions. Through these efforts, mom has not fallen in several months or sustained any serious injuries. Emily (general manager) is very transparent and follows through on any concerns with good feedback and investigations. As an Internist working with patients in program related housing, I am too having to care for congregate setting of immunocompromised elderly during Covid. It is very difficult and demanding especially when information is constantly fluid and developing. I admire Emily''s transparency and genuine honesty in her updates and communications. Mom is safe and not lonely with culturally appropriate meals and can communicate with staff. She has not lost weight and is reminded to hydrate regularly. I know she is aging and forgetting more and that she is at a very high level of care. I also know her needs will increase but will be appropriate for goals of care for quality of life and comfort measures as appropriate. Levels of care change and increase. Emily and the care team staff works with us to ensure we can all maintain the goals and quality safely. Should mom advance and level no longer be safe at the intermittent supervision level, then Emily helps us adjust towards goals whether it be comfort measures at Aegis Gardens or need for higher level of supervision at a safer setting. My only concern is that it is very expensive especially for care portion as care needs advance. The Ala carte point system isn''t user friendly to understand and every little thing has points or cost which could be included. If you have the means and cultural needs, Aegis Gardens is a quality Assisted Living with Memory Care for your loved ones needing intermittent supervision. It also can transition to hospice waiver if goals become comfort focused despite high level of care needs. It is not a nursing home, so if goals of care demand higher levels, listen to the staff because they want the safest most appropriate care for your loved ones. Partnership is the key to success and quality of life for our loved ones.
