When shopping for an assisted living facility, it is important to keep in mind that at some point, your loved ones may experience subtle signs of decline. It you are not present to actively notice those signs - either because you are far away or because visitors cannot be in the facility, you need to know that staff is paying attention, noticing the signs, and communicating the information to you. At the very least, additional services paid for should be rendered. Unfortunately, due to CoVid lockdowns, I didn''t find out until it was too late that routine activities like changing my mother''s hearing aid batteries weekly weren''t happening. Having never been able to get into her room, I did not know that her bed was too high for her to plant her feet on the ground - shouldn''t that be a standard part of room set-up? Incredibly, the director of the ALF at the time had the nerve to blame me for my mom contracting CoVid, even though I could never see her in person. I was told it was the "groceries" I dropped off - the groceries I sterilized prior to delivering and that I was told there was a quarantining procedure for. This place would have been perfect for mom if she was completely independent, and needed no assistance at all.

Assisted Living: There is no substitute for regularly seeing and checking in on your loved one in person. Unfortunately, this wasn’t possible during COVID lockdowns. I did discover medication mixups (inexcusable, as I was paying for medication management); but didn’t learn until it was too late that routine care, such as changing hearing aid batteries (which they said they were doing weekly) wasn’t being done. Having never been able to get into her room, I had no idea that her bed was too high for her to safely put her feet on the floor. The AL director last winter/spring was more apt to blame me for their missteps than she was to take responsibility for fixing them. This may be a fine place for an adult who has no physical limitations and who is capable of advocating strongly for themselves, but it was not the right fit for my mom.
