AVOID THIS PLACE AND ANY RETIREMENT UNLIMITED, INC PROPERTY. THEIR POLICIES ARE TERRIBLE AND TOTALLY NON-COMPASSIONATE. My parents have been residents at Barrington ay Hioaks in Richmond (a RUI property) since August 2022. My mother needed assisted living; however, my father is independent living. They complained all the time about the food. It was cold, bland and inedible. Also, they stopped serving dinner very early. They also complained about the time it took for an aide or nurse to come to their apartment after pushing their call button. Recently, my mother started to decline health wise and was confined to her hospital bed. She passed away approximately 8am on January 1, 2024. After dealing with the grief for a few days, we inquired about my dad leaving since he really did not need to live there. The staff approached him about moving to a 1 bedroom since he wouldn’t need 2 bedrooms anymore. We were told that he would be required to pay for my mom’s assisted living charges for January in addition to his “add on” cost. Then he could give his 30 days’ notice only on February 1st and would have to pay for charges for February also. We asked about compassion since our mom had passed away at 8am on January 1st and dad wanted to move back to Williamsburg to be closer to family. The director, Ms. Mills, stated that this was their policy for 40 years and they weren’t changing it. My mom was literally alive for 8 hours in January 2024 and still they are requiring him to pay for 2 months before letting him out of the contract. I left messages for Ms. Mills to return my call and she never did. I also called the corporate offices of RUI asking for a call. NO ONE RETURNED MY MESSAGES. RIDICULOUS. DO NOT go to a RUI property especially Barrington at Hioaks. UPDATE: Please look at the 5 star reviews that have been recently posted. None of them are from RESIDENTS. They are from "people" (probably employees or their family members) who took a TOUR of the facility. None from anyone who actually lives there. There are other posts from actual employees INCLUDING THE DIRECTOR of the facility, Ms Mills!!!! They are just trying to hide the actual resident and family bad 1 star reviews. I have reported all of the employee reviews to Google. I still have never heard from anyone at that facility other than 2 of the physical therapists who reached out after my father''s recent passing. STAY AWAY!!!

My grandmother stayed in this facility, and was neglected In the memory care ward. She was provided with food and activities, but when we came to visit she was left visibly dirty, and unshowered. When we asked about it, we were told they had given her a shower. We bought the shampoo and conditioner and regularly checked to find it full, showing she wasn''t washed by the staff and her hair was kept unwashed. We have more examples of neglect, but as a result we had her removed from this facility. My mother continuously attempted to contact the director and others, and was not answered unless she physically drove to the facility. If you are not in the immediate area, your family members would experience this neglect and you would never be the wiser.

The Barrington at Hioaks has.employees that were engaging with my mom and dad while they lived there. For the most part we were satisfied that they got good care. The food is excellent and they do take time with the menus. The dining area is nice. They have lots of activities for the residents that are helpful if the residents participate. Many of the staff were helpful in the nursing department, on site therapy, finance and the front desk staff. The staff in memory care has wonderful activities for the residents. The Assisted living side of the house seems to have more consistent care. When our mom was down in memory care, we saw that her room cleanliness, and her personal hygiene were neglected on a regular basis. The other mention I would give is that in the last 6 months, if we were to get any answers, or any communication, we needed to go there in person and speak to the staff. We would not get call backs or communication via email except for a few. That was the most difficult for our family. The executive director failed to return our calls and emails and for the most part, ignored our concerns. Also on a safety issue note, the elevator on the one end of the building where my parents lived has been out of order since November I believe. This is a major safety concern because many of the residents are in wheelchairs. They would have to be gotten to the other side of the building in order to get out in the case of a fire. My mother had a beautiful Cardinal sweatshirt that her granddaughter gave her. We never got that back, even though we asked several times, and we saw the sweatshirt on another Memory Care resident. For the rent and amount of money that was paid to the Barrington, the last 6 months did not live up to what they claim to do for your family members and their standards. I will give this facility two stars for the experiences that we had.

A welcoming experience! From a luxurious red carpet to a warm and friendly staff the Barrington has it all and so much more. I cannot say enough good things about the Barrington! From the day we first toured we knew this place was going to be it. We also toured with William and had a blast. He was so very helpful thought the entire process and really cemented the Barrington as home for mom. He really gave us a personalized and incredible experience. Cannot thank him enough every call, email, and text he would get back to us immediately. The food is so good with such great options. The rooms are so large and well maintained. The calendar is packed and full of great activities with so much going on. If you are looking for an assisted living location for mom or dad I highly recommend the Barrington at Hioaks. Thank you all for all you do
