Do What You Love at Sunrise of Smithtown
Sunrise of Smithtown, an assisted living and memory care community on Long Island’s North Shore, gives seniors the amenities and support they need to do what brings them joy, whether that’s learning new things, socializing with friends, exercising, or all the above. Residents here take part in the Baking Club, play group games, attend on-site concerts and gather for afternoon socials. They’ll take walks on the scenic trails at Caleb Smith State Park, relax at the pristine beaches of Sunken Meadow State Park, fish on Lake Ronkonkoma and head downtown to try new restaurants and find deals at the shops. When they’re in a laid-back mood, they can curl up with a book in the library, feel warm sea breezes on the patio or grab snacks and coffee at the 24-hour bistro.
Sunrise of Smithtown is heavily involved in the community; seniors find fulfillment through opportunities with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, local veterans groups and the Parkinson’s Association.
Sunrise of Smithtown: Assisted Living and Memory Care
Sunrise of Smithtown proudly boasts a Silver National Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). That means superior care; the staff here undergo advanced training, and they’re around 24 hours a day to assist seniors with medication management and activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing and mobility. In addition, the on-staff nurse conducts monthly checkups, and other professionals regularly visit, including a physical and occupational therapist, a dentist, a podiatrist and a psychotherapist.
The level of care is even more advanced for older adults with dementia in the Reminiscence Memory Care Program. Life Enrichment Managers trained in Alzheimer’s Association-approved techniques tailor personalized care plans that look after these seniors’ social, emotional, mental and physical needs.

I was only a perspective client looking at the facility for my mom, but after my tour, I would never put my mom at Sunrise. Initially i was impressed with the tour guides speech and knowledge, but as the meeting progressed things took a turn. We toured the whole facility. A client on the memory unit was asking for help. The tour guide said she would get someone to assist, but instead, she walked right over to the elevator to carry on with the tour. I let her know we can wait if she needs to notify someone to assist the patient. The Tour guide rolled her eyes and said “she always asks for help, she doesn''t need anything”. I stood there a moment and so she huffed and went over to a nurse. I could hear them both talking negatively about the patient. (Personally i thought that was a golden opportunity for them to showcase their skills, and boy did they! 👎🏼 ) At the end of the tour, we were reviewing pricing. They only gave me a quote for the memory care unit. When i asked for the Assisted living price, her and the Executive Director became very confrontational. Despite never meeting my mom, they insisted she needed memory care and refused to give me an assisted living price. The Executive Director brushed me off saying “ i know this is hard for you to accept”. I let them know the reason Im here is because Ive accepted it. They again brushed me off, saying I don''t need the Assisted Living price and THEY will be the ones to determine where she goes. I let them know that they can do an assessment, but MY full time job is assessing patients to determine level of care, just in another state, so i know what LOC is needed currently. Only then did they finally agree to give me the price. I asked for the potential patient capacity of the facility. The tour guide angrily said “ WHY does everyone ask that? I dont get it!?” I explained that she is marketing this place as a “smaller Assisted living” so i wanted to know the scale. She responded “i don''t see why that even matters”. Again, lots of back and forth and interrupting me before she answered my question. The Tour guide then tells me the food is “ Farm to table”. Personally I thought that was nice, so I asked which farm they get the food from. Again, huffing and with attitude, the tour guide said “ we don''t ACTUALLY get it from a farm. Its just an expression! We cook everything in house”. So… Im not sure if she just doesnt know what farm to table means, or if she is just doing a sales gimmick assuming no one will ask questions. Either way, if the sales office, the Executive Director, and staff get this confrontational with lucid prospective clients, I am scared to think how they treat incapacitated adults who cant defend themselves. Never ever will i place my mom here. Also, my mom was assessed by two places we are considering, both determined Assisted Living is better for her at this stage. So I may know a thing or two. Just saying 🤷🏼♀️ Ive been in and out of dozens of assisted livings, nursing homes, and memory units throughout my career, both private pay and government funded, i would strongly caution people on this place, but to each their own.

My mother has been living here for over 3 years now...I can honestly say she wouldn''t still be alive without there compassionate and attentive care. Sunrise provides a higher level of care than most assisted living organizations are capable of. The whole place is clean, bright, well decorated, with outdoor spaces to enjoy a beautiful day. They provide varied activities throughout the day and the food is excellent with varied choices at each meal..there must be a new chef, cause the meals have improved the last 6 months or so.👏

We had such high hopes for this place, they even gave us a great incentive to move in. Unfortunately the care that they gave my grandmother was inadequate. I would stay away from this place if I were you.

We toured Sunrise of Smithtown, we liked it very much, and we're going back next Wednesday. It just seems very nice, almost like home, it's as close as you can get to it. We were very pleased with it. We saw the lady that was touring us, she was very nice too, and the manager, but I don't remember her name. She was also very nice. The room was very nice, spacious, and very modern. It had a small kitchenette area. It was very nice, more than I expected. It has its own bath. The dining area was beautiful. Everything was perfectly clean to me. It's nearby.

I thought Sunrise of Smithtown had a very homey feeling. It was very attractive. It almost felt like a boutique hotel. The staff were very pleasant. The person we met with, Susan, was extremely helpful and very down to earth. The executive director, Jody, came in and introduced herself and was very pleasant and down to earth, too. We liked the rooms that we saw. We were actually pleasantly surprised at how nice it was, and we liked it. We liked the fact that it was in the community. They have arts and crafts stuff. They have some music, and they have a cafe. They have three meals a day, and you can get something from the cafe as well.
