We chose Runk & Pratt at Smith Mountain Lake because they primarily offered very supportive assisted living for my mother-in-law. She has dementia and she's coming out of a memory care unit where she was previously, so they allowed her to try assisted living. So that's what we're trying right now. Also, its proximity to our home. They have devotions in the morning and little calisthenics, sort of exercises. In the afternoons, they usually have some kind of activity, whether it's a craft or music or bingo. They play Wii bowling. So, there's always something. They also went to see the Christmas lights. One evening they got on the bus, and anybody that wanted to could drive around and go to this special Christmas light place. So, it's things like that that she didn't get to do when she was in memory care. So she's able to participate in some of those activities. My mother-in-law has her own studio apartment. We brought our own furniture, but it has room for a small dorm refrigerator and a couple of chairs. The room is fairly large. She has her own bathroom with a shower and toilet sink. It has two clothing closets and a linen closet. So it's a fairly nice-sized room. The staff seems to be very caring. They seem to care about her, and they seem to be very attentive to her needs.

Runk & Pratt at Smith Mountain Lake was pretty good. That was one of the better ones. It was a little more expensive, but they would bring my mother's meals to her and they would always take them down to the cafeteria. They always have somebody on-call going around. At the time, they were going on a bus trip out to the lake. The staff was great. Maintenance was good and it was really clean. In the room they showed me that they were going to get ready, they had stripped the walls down and they were going to repaint it. It was all right.

What I liked about Runk & Pratt is it's a mixed home community. It has patio homes, apartments, assisted living, and memory care. It's not huge, but it's large. It's very clean, and very well maintained on the outside. They welcomed us at the door. Of course, you have to do all of the covid checking things. My sister-in-law talked to Kelly and I worked with Mary Beth when I visited. Both are very helpful and very empathetic. They answered all of our questions and showed us exactly what we needed to see. We were very pleased with what we saw. When you first come into the lobby, they have a pretty good-sized library filled with books. It was set up just like a library, even organized by a Dewey Decimal system. They had it very well organized so that you could find what you wanted. Assisted living has more mobility and the ability to get to those things. The memory care we visited is secure, which we were very pleased with. They have a hairdresser, so they can go and get their hair done. They have a very nice dining room, which was very clean. They have a sensory room, which is unusual. I went in there and I think that it can probably be a little scary at first because it's dark and has some glowing things. I think my mother (once she gets there) will enjoy that. The thing that we like the best about it (other than the initial care), was it what we were looking for. It's very bright. It's open and has high ceilings and wide hallways; it is not confining at all. My mother is used to being outside so being in a smaller, confined environment would be very hard for her. They have a secure large courtyard for them to go out in. It has all kinds of flowers and shrubs for them to enjoy. It's very nice, and we were very pleased. The dining room has lots of windows looking out into a courtyard view with large light-colored tables. It was very welcoming. There was nothing dreary about it. They did have a refrigerator for snacks that residents had access to throughout the day. They had different juice dispensers that they could get to during the day. They really work with them on hydration. All of that's available for them to come and go in there.

My father will be moving into the assisted living of Runk & Pratt at Smith Mountain Lake, and my mother has been in their memory care. They are very caring, efficient, and concerned about the patients they are taking care of in all aspects of their health and well-being. They also ensure that they have physical activities that they need. It is a very good facility and I highly recommend them. They have just reopened the facility to family members. We can only sit in the room; we can't get out and see the rest of the facility because they are still worried about COVID and they are still making sure that all patients are safe. So they're opening slowly. The girl that goes and cuts hair there cuts our hair too, so they have haircuts, laundry, a library, and a courtyard. The room that my mom's in is mostly just a bedroom and a bath area, but they do have different levels of rooms. They have rooms that have the ability to have a kitchenette in them, there are rooms that are a little bit bigger with a work area beside the bedroom, a bath, and lounge area. So, they have different sizes of rooms. They go from independent living to assisted living to memory care, so all of it's a little different. My dad is moving into a bigger room. It does not have the kitchenette, but it is a nice size room that can accommodate both the bed and a sitting area, and it has a little nook where there is a desk and stuff for work, like a work area.
