We looked at Paramount Senior Living at Newark. The tour was excellent. The people were very informative. It's nice that it's located right next door to the senior center for additional activities. That's all positive. The thing that is negative is that the community is a little dated and it needs some updates. I thought the person who gave the tour was excellent. She was very informative and very knowledgeable. The dining area looked very open and very pleasant. They had a calendar of events that seemed to change, and they had a lot of facilities available, like physical therapy and that kind of thing, so it looked like they're quite an active community.

My brother-in-law is very happy there at Paramount Senior Living at Newark. The meals are very good. The attendants there are very good and very friendly. His room is very nice. The condition of the community is very good. It had an opening right away, which we needed. He has participated in some of the activities, but I honestly don't know what they all are. I only know bingo because they came and got him and told him bingo was going on. They have a bus or transportation if they need it, and they have a happy hour on Fridays, and entertainment. I would go there myself if I had to. I haven't seen anything to differ with. The dining room is very, very nice. I saw the activities room. It was active with different things going on. I saw their entertainment and happy hour. The value for the money is very good. It could be a lot higher in some other places. I personally don't think that he would need anything nicer than what he's got. I'm very happy with it. It's close to us and that's another plus. We can get there or transport him to his doctor's appointments and whatnot, although they do provide a bus, but it's high priced for the bus to take them.

Paramount was a good place. We had a very rocky start, but our loved one did come home better than he went in. The second night, nobody came to take him to dinner, so we had to go out and get him some dinner. Throughout his stay, we tried to get across to everyone not to ask if wants to do things but tell him it was time to go. He will say no every time but wanting to go. Like anyplace, the staff makes all the difference. Some good and some getting by.

Make sure they properly assess your loved one's needs and capabilities. My dad was assessed appropriately for their memory care unit . On the first night dad was anxious and confuse ( normal for dementia) and he didn’t feel safe struck a care member. I came down to calm him. Second night I was advised they would press charges on him. I mean what aren’t they trained in dementia? He lasted 9 days we paid for well ore then that before they sent him to the hospital I was actually glad as I never felt. He was safe there despite me being ready to run down to the facility in a heart beat, I finally kept him away from there and moved him out. He is now in appropriate care level… I have horrible feelings about Paramount. I did call corporate and they did refund a portion so I give props for that but they totally profited off our elderly parents .. horrible experience.
