I''ll start by saying I understand the challenges of caring for the elderly, it''s a tough and demanding job. We brought my mom to this facility (as a recommended 1-2 week transition from hospital care to going home) and made the decision to get her out of there within an hour. Just wheeled her into a room and left us sitting there for 45 minutes with no discussion or visit from any nurse, doctor or staff. Her bathroom (shared with 4 patients) was dirty on arrival, roomate was clearly sick, sniffling coughing and sneezing. When we finally got to speak to someone and told them we were going to take her out of there, the nurse became very rude and nasty. We agreed to sign the voluntary discharge paperwork (specifying it was against the facility''s recommendation and absolving them of any liability), but they refused to forward her required prescriptions, which were solely in their control after her transfer from the hospital to their facility. Who denies an 88 year old patient required prescriptions, simply out of spite because we chose not to have her stay at (or rather subject her to) their facility? A horrible experience from the moment she came through the entrance.

My Mother has been in the rehab wing for about a month. The staff has been wonderful, supportive and nurturing during this time. My Mom has made so much progress during elder stay is very happy with the care she has received.

This place is one of the worst nursing homes I’ve ever experienced! They are so short staffed that the nursing staff is completely burnt out and staff turnover is very high. The food is horrible and residents are often sent the wrong food consistency and diet on their meal trays. There are also many diabetics there and there are seldom snacks (carbs, peanut butter, OJ etc) available on the units in case of a diabetic crises. Some (not all) negligent nurses who aren’t assessing residents or doing rounds on their shift. This place definitely needs a revamping and new management/asministration or the state needs to shut it down. Totally unsafe, please don’t allow your loved one to be placed here.

My father was in this facility for one night and the next morning had to be sent to the Emergency Department because of the overnight nursing neglectful and abusive treatment. Our family contacted the person in charge who assured us a full investigation would happen. The end result was her telling us there were no witnesses. End of investigation. No one held accountable. My father is well aware of what happened to him. This is appalling. Never let your loved one be admitted to Orono Commons.
