My Mom moved into Mercer Hill in October 2022. She was so excited for all of the opportunities and amenities promised at the time the contract was signed. There were many positives about life at Mercer Hill. Beth Lynn, Activities Director and McKenna Kingsbaue, Associate Activities Director are amazing. They treat the residents with respect and compassion. They work hard to plan trips and activities that will interest the residents and my Mom loved both women. Unfortunately, my Mother fell ill in December and was placed on Hospice in January. All my Mother wanted was to be at home in her final days so I arranged with hospice to have her brought to HER home in Mercer Hill. However, instead of being met with concern and compassion I was met by Daniel Thompson, Guest Services Director with attempts to block my Mother from being in her own home in her final days. While still getting my Mother settled into her bed and hospice arranging care, Daniel came up to my Mother’s room to confront me about bringing her back to her apartment insisting that they have never had anyone on hospice on the Independent Side. (so the obvious concern was that Mercer Hill would not be profiting off my mother’s last days). I explained to Dan that I had arranged all of my own care and that Mercer Hill would have no responsibilities and as she is on the Independent side, this fits with the message that Dan consistently delivers to the residents stating that residents on the independent living side must care for themselves despite their own website stating differently. When I let Dan know that my Mother and I would not be leaving and informed him that I would sue if necessary he stood 10 feet from my dying mother and laughed. As I pushed back on Dan, letting him know that I intended to grant my Mother’s wish to die at home he informed me that he would need to speak with Debra Bodner the General Manager and ran off downstairs. At no point during this brief and unsettling conversation did Dan ever ask about my Mother, express concern for the fact that she was on hospice and clearly ill or even ask how I was doing under the circumstance. When Dan returned 30 minutes later with Beth Lynn the Activities Director Dan still expressed no compassion or concern for the situation and very haughtily stated that “she can stay as long as she has 24 hour care”. When I confronted Dan about his attitude and the fact that he had the indecency to laugh at me while my Mother lay dying he again began to laugh and told me that he brought Beth with him to show compassion. Let me remind you, Daniel Thompson is the Guest Services Director. His job is to take care of the residents, listen to their concerns and address them as necessary. Dan is never out among the residents, he shows no interest in the residents or their well being. Shortly after my Mother’s death, while speaking with one of my Mother’s friends, Dan walked by and the friend referred to him as the biggest Dead Wood at Mercer Hill and stated that he is worthless. After learning how my Mother and I were treated in her final days, many residents complained to me that neither Dan nor Debra had any concern for the residents and that if complaints were made by the residents they were summarily ignored by Dan and Debra. An experience I had myself when talking to both after Debra raised my Mother’s rent $500 per month (a 9% rent increase) on her first anniversary. Debra Bodner, as the General Manager showed absolutely no empathy for the fact that the residents lived on a fixed income and that a 9% rent increase was in fact cruel and unethical. It concerns me that Dan and Debra are running Mercer Hill as I have seen many negative affects from their obvious lack of concern for the residents and hope that the owners of Mercer Hill realize that a community with many wonderful features is slowly being destroyed by the very people whose job it is to care for and protect the residents, Daniel Thompson and Debra Bodner.

After searching multiple facilities, Mercer Hill was top of the list based on the facility, activities and staff. After moving my father in, it was indeed the right choice. Tons of interesting activities, great food selections, the cafe concept is wonderful for breakfast and lunch. After a recent hospital stay, my father needed a little extra care and Mercer Hill stepped right up. The information flow is fantastic. Dad is actually doing better here than living by himself. If you are looking for a place for yourself or a parent, put this at the top of your list to compare all others...

My Daddy moved to Mercer Hill this past June from a nice Senior Living home in Az to be closer to me. I did a lot of research to find a place as good as the one he left and I am happy to say that Mercer Hill is even nicer than where he was living before. He is doing great! He is in the first level of Personal Care and the residence and staff are wonderful. When he wanted a change in his daily routine for his medications, they treated him with care and respect by listening to his concerns and preferences. They came up with a plan that would work for everyone and he is very thankful. My 11 year old daughter visits often and has commented on how nice it smells in the whole place and how pretty everything is. She is a very honest pre-teen :) I highly recommend taking the time to visit the community for yourself or your loved one too!
