My dad stayed there for only a week after suffering a stroke before having to go back to the hospital largely due to the terrible & neglectful care at Marywood. Their response time was often more than 20 minutes, and one night 45 minutes. The staff would not take patients out of rooms at all and the nurses hang out by the desk and do not interact with the patients. They hire from outside services at night and the night time staff does not even know when patients are asking for help due to no lights outside the rooms, no buzzers when a patient calls for help, and they do not wear pagers like they are supposed to. I reported the poor care numerous times to the nursing director and nothing changed. Marywood needs to make changes or be shut down. After being discharged from the hospital, he stayed at Spectrum Rehab on Kalamazoo and the high quality of care there made it even more apparent of how terrible Marywood was. I feel lucky that my dad made it out of there alive. Do NOT take your loved one to Marywood.

My stay at Marywood Center restored my faith in rehabilitation facilities. I had had my fourth spinal surgery. Walking and standing were my biggest challenges. The therapists not only allowed me to rest, which I find essential to my recovery, but the therapy was effective, very helpful, and tailored to my condition. They did not overwhelm me which was my experience with a previous well known facility. The food was also tailored for me. I have a number of food allergies and the food director visited me on several occasions to make sure he worked around them. I was really impressed by this. My care at Marywood was so positive, I have recommended it to my dearest friends. Meredyth Parrish, PHD

This facility was a nightmare for my mother and my family. When we arrived there were no towels, pillows or blankets in the room and the staff could only find towels so we went home to get pillows and blankets. They did not give medications in a timely fashion and in fact my mother did not receive critical medications on more than one occasion. I made a formal complaint to the state of Michigan about the medication issue and they validated my complaints. You can not be assured your loved one will get their medications! My mother needed assistance to get to the rest room and had to wait up to 30 minutes after pressing the call button. When I complained that she might soil herself and the bed as a result of these long waits their answer was to bring a bag of depends. No concern for the dignity of their patients! Meal orders were routinely goofed up. What is the point of allowing you to order from a menu if you bring random items. Staff were surly and unfriendly. On one occasion when I arrived to check on my mother I found her in tears and fearful. She relayed that a nurse aide was verbally abusive to her in my absence. I spent as much time as I could with her, 6-8 hours a day, apparently this wasn’t enough. We ultimately ended up transferring our mother back to the hospital. She had a medical issue which should have been recognized by the nursing staff but wasn’t. This place is a warehouse for the elderly. They treat a vulnerable population horribly. We are so sorry we brought our mother here.
