The staff at Grand Lake Gardens who gave us the interview was extremely helpful. We felt very comfortable in that interview. She also took us around and showed us a couple of rooms, a 1-bedroom, and a 2-bedroom. I liked the setup of their dining room. You could order the menu of the day or you could order what you want from the menu. All the residents that I came across were quite friendly. My overall sense was that the residents were happy and comfortable there. I particularly liked the idea that they have acreage outside with a lot of foliage, shrubs, flowers, and trees. There's an area that's set aside with planter boxes where the residents can grow their own plants. We had lunch there and the food was quite acceptable. Even if the food wasn't that great, the people serving made it very pleasant.

There is lots of outdoor space including an area with tall trees and places to sit, a rose garden, some fruit trees and a large courtyard. The dining room is on the top floor with a great view of wooded hills. Management has an open door policy. There are lots of activities and residents are encouraged to make suggestions. I feel very at home here.

My Dad has been at GLG for a more than four years, and it has been a good fit for him. The core staff have been wonderfully stable and supportive since he moved in. Prior to COVID, I met several of the residents who have led very diverse and interesting lives. The dining room perched on the top floor has some great views of the surrounding neighborhood and Berkeley-Oakland Hills, and the Zen Garden in the back is a peaceful oasis. Overall, a great place.

I haven't tried the food but I've looked at the menu and it looks good. They don't have a hot pool. It's clean and well-decorated, and it's in a very congenial neighborhood. It's near everything since it's near downtown Oakland, including shopping areas. The 1-bedroom that I saw was generous.
