Not for COVID patients! My mother (63) was transferred to Phelps after 2 days at Salem Memorial for difficulty breathing and low O2 caused by COVID. She was admitted straight to ICU at Phelps. She continued to go downhill little by little each day. Her daily doctor was Dr Gibbs. He continuously told her that she wouldn’t get better care anywhere else. She fully trusted what he said. She eventually was doing so poorly that I and my siblings begged her to transfer. After being at Phelps for 10 days, she finally told Dr Gibbs that she wanted to transfer to a larger hospital. He informed her that because of her declined condition she couldn’t transfer now without being on a vent but didn’t suggest going on a vent. And again that she wouldn’t get any different care anywhere else. 3 days later a new doctor came onto ICU rotation. Within a minute of seeing my mother in her declined state, he immediately told her that she MUST be vented and transferred ASAP. She was vented quickly, stabilized, and the doctor called around to St Louis, Columbia and Springfield. She was transferred to SLU early the next morning and immediately put on ECMO. Hey Dr Gibbs- ECMO is a treatment that Phelps can’t offer!! Phelps doctors must acknowledge their limitations and transfer when they reach those limitations. I do not recommend this hospital.

Do not bring anything valuable to this place. One of the male janitor is a thief and a dumb one. When my brother was staying at this place he was very sick and pretty much had to stay in his bed 24/7. Well guess what he was sick but not stupid, at least he''s able to tell the difference if you''re actually cleaning the room or tries to steal by opening the dresser and search his belongings. Yea like we''re stupid enough to put cash or expensive jewelry in there.

My 82 year old father was sent there after knee replacement surgery last week. No security when I walked through. You simply have run of the place. I get to his room before he did and it was filthy. He arrives at 7pm into a bed with no bed rails and nobody to help him get up to use the bathroom. There is no supervision whatsoever. Next morning he asks for a walker to go the bathroom, they do not have one. He had to wait til 9am for my mom to arrive with her own walker for him to use. When asked for a glass of orange juice, they gave him a cracked glass with hair in it! This place needs to be shut down. I will be contacting the Board of Health. Stay far away!

My personal experience with Heathwood Healthcare is very positive, even if the reason for being there is sad. My mom stayed at Heathwood for the last two months of her life. When mom first came there, we were not sure what to expect; all we hoped for is that she was comfortable and pain-free. Our first impression was great. Her 3rd floor looked recently updated, and mom was placed in a private room. After a few days, as we got familiar with the stuff and routine, we saw that the quality of care was great too. Nursing, personal care and hygiene were excellent. All ssistants were experienced and always attentive to any signs of pain or discomfort. Some were just wonderful; Chantal was mom’s favorite. Mom was bed ridden and could not press the call button herself, so they checked up on her often. Her room and the whole floor was very clean, no bad odors at all, her bedding always fresh. The food was great, tasty and nicely served, even when mom had puréed diet. The Medical Director was there every Friday, ready to answer any questions, and other personnel always available. I spent a fair amount of time with mom at Heathwood and it looked like it was a standard level of care; I did not see any mistreated patients or unhappy relatives. Overall it seemed that the staff was well qualified and attentive, and the standards of hygiene were very high. They say that the management have changed recently, so possibly this is the reason for better quality of care. In any case, I am very grateful to Heathwood for excellent care they provided for my mom.
