My brother was placed at Canterbury following his 2nd stroke, memory loss, Severe emphysema. He was bedridden on oxygen. I visited most days after work to be with him and care for his needs. Then Covid lockdown happened and his family could not visit. No telephone was available. Phone calls at the nurse''s station were rarely picked up. I had purchased a flip phone which my brother used for years to communicate with. I was told that it was not charged and asked for it to be on constant charge as I had left it. I still couldnt get through. I was told that the desk phone was available if he could get to it. I couldn''t get anyone to take him in a w/c. I received a call from the ARNP, Anne Marie, when my brother was going downhill. We were able to spend time together in the end, and he passed knowing that he was loved. We are so grateful to her! She is a truly wonderful example of caring that counts. Caroline and night crew were also wonderful. I must mention someone who could brush up on her people skills: Stephanie, Social work director. She was caustic in her dealings with us and tried to bar us from putting my brother in hospice while he was at Canterbury. I realize that this was a stressful time, but professionalism and a TINY bit of empathy goes a long way!

At first I thought this was a nice clean facility. The lobby does not smell but once you get into where the patients are, the pee odor is ridiculously strong. Not sure if it’s a staff shortage issue. There are about 2 nurses that have been helpful, but the rest do not care about the patients & are easily irritated when asking them to do their normal basic job duties. The food smells & taste gross. (Bring your own food) Families, I would highly recommend that a family member is present to advocate for your love one that is staying in the facility. I would not put my trust leaving your loved one alone with their staff to get things done properly & in a timely manner. Make sure you are staying on top of your loved ones, scheduling meetings with the doctor to check on progress & ensuring the nurses are giving the right treatment. The positive part about this facility is admissions & manager were very accommodating in meeting our families needs to be able to monitor our loved one to ensure he is well taken care of.
