From The Community
Get ready to live a life with fewer worries and more fun-filled options. At Brookdale Spruce Wood, we take care of the boring basics, like housekeeping and cooking, to free up your time and empower you to live your best life. If you need extra support, we’ve got you covered. Our campus, nestled in beautiful Durham, New Hampshire, offers three levels of care: independent living, assisted living, and memory care.
If you’re curious what a typical day looks like in our community, then you’ll be pleased to know that there truly is no typical day—each day is unique to how you want to plan it. One day, you may decide to take it easy with a cup of morning coffee in our community courtyard and then curl up to a good book checked out from our fully-stocked library. The next day you might be filled with energy and kickstart your day with a group fitness class, followed by an arts and crafts class, gardening group, and community game night. Given our community’s great location, we also plan group excursions to enjoy the great outdoors, like to the seacoast, lakes, or mountains.
Seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia in our memory care program will also get to enjoy these great amenities and social events, along with a structured daily path of engagement that helps preserve their sense of identity and strengthens current skills. This includes activities like morning mental workouts, clustered group discussions, walking groups, and music therapy.
Before move-in day, you’ll be able to choose an apartment floor plan that works best for you. We have apartments that range from cozy one-bedrooms to spacious friendship suites. No matter what you decide on, you’ll enjoy a private bathroom built with an emergency response system, ample closet space, plush carpeting, and lovely windows that let in an abundance of natural light. And as a pet-friendly community, your four-legged best friends are more than welcome—it just wouldn’t feel like home without them, right?
When it comes to your care plan, everything is customizable based on your needs. If you need help with things like grooming, dressing, medication management, healthcare provider coordination, getting around campus, or dining assistance, we’re here to help. Seniors in our memory care program will also receive gentle guidance, encouragement, and reminders from our attentive care staff.
We also understand how important safety is for your peace of mind, which is why we have care staff on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week to be alerted to an emergency.

I didn't care for Brookdale Spruce Wood. There was nothing that stood out that seemed particularly unusual. The place looked OK. We went to different rooms and we were shown around. While we were waiting for the person to show us around, they had a resident spend some time with us and talk with us, and that seemed a little strange as if they were trying to convince us that it was a good place from one of the people who lived there.

I went to Brookdale Spruce Wood to visit a friend who lives there. I was also given a tour by Abby, the woman who does the marketing. I thought their food was good. The people were a mix of independent and assisted living, but the rooms they give to the independent were different from the assisted living people, though assisted living pays a lot more money. The marketing people who toured me were very good. I also had lunch there and the food was good. They had a little room with three or four machines, and they were using it for therapy, and people were supposed to come in and use it themselves. I did not get the feeling that it was an active community. It felt like everybody liked to sit around and talk. They have a salon, and the upkeep of the place was excellent. Everybody had a walker. I didn't see one resident who didn't have a walker, though that's not true at other places. Since predominantly people with walkers come to the facility, it's a very quiet and passive population of people, and it's not going to be very active.

We've had a great experience with Brookdale Sprucewood. Dad says the desserts are amazing! I am particularly pleased with the medical attention my parents received. Way more than giving them daily meds. They test blood sugar 4 times a day and administer insulin. There is a primary care doctor who visits once a week, and other doctors who visit monthly. For seniors who need a bit more medical attention, Brookdale is a great choice.

Amazing community, my mother LOVES it! Facility is very nice , needs some updating (e.g. emergency lighting, bigger generator to support the building during storms. Most full time staff have been there for some time and are very kind and loyal but they are definitely understaffed post covid and don't have enough hourly help to support full dining hours or to have a team of handymen supporting the building need etc. Those are my only observations but again my mother being safe and in a caring environment that is bright and clean is absolutely everything. Thanks again for the referral!

Brookdale Spruce Wood was OK, but they only give you one meal a day and that's supper and they have a kitchenette. At my mom's age, she might not want to make a meal, but the people were pleasant and they were doing a good job. They have almost everything there. They have a library, a gym, exercise classes, and walking trails. It's just out of our price range and it's way out of town. It's in the middle of the woods. It's quiet and peaceful though.

They had a lot of stuff for the residents to do. They had a lot of trips planned, and they had a monthly calendar for the residents. They also have a fitness center, salon, dining room, private dining room, and library. The facility was up-to-date and very clean, I didn't notice any issues.
