My grandma was put here when she was moved from her house, and is back again after some health issues. Seems like they treat her well. She complains but she complains about everything, but haven''t seen any signs of malpractice or abuse here.

My beloved mom spent 20 days at Broad Creek Care Center in July of 2020. She was not ill and was supposedly placed there for her safety while my stepfather convalesced at the hospital despite her children’s offer for her to stay with them or with her in the comfort of her own home with her dog. During this time she was mostly quarantined to her room. My mom’s vital signs were checked daily. As a nurse, I was able to discern through a phone conversation with her that she’d developed high blood pressure. I left a message at the nurse’s station and later talked to inpatient and out-patient nurses about this concern yet her hypertension went unaddressed. She and I were furthermore not allowed to participate in her own care meeting where recommendations were made without a thorough evaluation by a specialist more less a physician which resulted in subsequent catastrophic decisions that have literally robbed her of her former life. My mom’s children and attorney have been unsuccessful in their requests for copies of her records for daily vital signs measurements and medication administration. This entire experience has been very eye opening not only in terms of medical negligence but in the loss of patient rights regarding confinement and being denied the comforting presence of her children and dog while she faced the possibility of losing her husband. A forged POA document was used while my mom still possessed the mental capacity to weigh in on decisions involving her. Facilities such as Broad Creek need to do a better job of monitoring for such abuse of power and be wary when patients and family are denied to play the role as advocate. The general public needs to be aware of the moral and legal implications of this experience.
