I visited A Brand New Day. They did not have assisted care, just memory care. They're brand new. The person who gave me the tour was pretty new, so what she gave me was basic stuff. The facility, in general, was clean. The room is good-sized compared to others. They had nice outdoor common areas, like patios. They have a very small community, not very big at all. The gal that showed me around for the tour was not really knowledgeable. As far as the facilities went, they weren't plush or anything, but it was clean and adequate.

I went to A Brand New Day and was a little early for my appointment (about 10 minutes). So, I walked through the gate and into the house, but no one was there. I had to wait before someone showed up. I even walked toward the back and still, nobody appeared. To me, that was kind of a negative. Nobody should be able to walk into a memory care facility or walk out without someone noticing. When I went in there, everybody was sitting around watching TV, which was OK, but I didn't see anything else going on and there were no walking trails. The staff seemed to be nice though and the lady that showed me around was very pleasant. It was an older home. The amenities were quite a bit less attractive. The rooms were small, very dark, and very old. It was clean but it was just in need of repairs. The upkeep and things were still great.

This community has been exceptional so far, and we do like that it is a smaller scaled community. They have different levels of care which is nice and the personnel there have been super kind and very cordial with our family.

My mom is at A Brand New Day. When I went in there, I was paying attention to all the faces, and I was paying attention to the interactions with the staff, and I didn't see one unhappy person there. They all seemed very content and happy to be there. The people that worked there were very nice and polite to the elderly, and the guy that runs it is just really nice, soft-spoken, and he's good with the people. It's the same with the owner. I was very impressed with him. It's not a big place, but that is sometimes better. It looked like they had ample staffing, too, and that's a big deal. The place is not the newest, but it's clean. They're very good with people and they're very good with my mom. She is a handful with dementia. When I showed up there the day after we moved her in, she had smiles on her face, which I hadn't seen in quite a while. So, that goes a long way with me because that's the biggest thing, it's the quality of life for her. If she was by herself, she was just isolated, especially with the COVID and everything. My daughter went to go see her the next morning and she kind of blew her off since she had people to go talk to. Before I ever put my mom in there, they had us there for lunch and their food is home-cooking. It's good. It's mild. I mean I had to keep my hands off the table, I might lose a finger or something, my mom was wolfing like she hadn't eaten in months. The food looks good. It's homecooked meals; it doesn't look like something you would get in a cafeteria. They had spaghetti and meatballs and garlic bread and fresh brussels sprouts with bacon. It was decent for lunch. I give them a 5 on the cleanliness. Stuff can always be better, but for what it is, there are plenty of seats for everybody and there's TV for everybody. My mom used to make jewelry and stuff, and the staff was talking about getting it together and seeing if she could gain back some of her skills. I'm hoping she'll gain back some of her verbal skills, which she's lost. A conversation with her is like playing a game of verbal charades, trying to figure out what she's trying to say. So far, I haven't seen anything that I thought was out of the ordinary or not good. This stuff might not be brand new, but it's all clean, and they seemed very conscientious about it. Compared to the other places around, it's a straight-up amount. Some of these places, they got a lower rent rate, but then anything that they have to do for my mom, they just tack on more. It's kind of not an upfront number that you get. At this point, she's just got memory issues and she's able to take care of herself, so she has to get the minimal care. It's just the basic rate that they quoted me, and then they take care of her meds and everything, and they don't charge any extra for that. So far, they have been very much upfront with everything.
