Carolina Gardens at Kathwood needs to upgrade before they start showing again. The staff said that the facility had bugs and that they were exterminating them. The room that she showed me had an odor, and she said that they're under new management, and they'll be renovating. The prices are just as high as everybody else to not have the best facility, the rooms don't have appliances. They have a nice garden but the place is in need of a lot of repairs. The person who gave the tour was very apologetic, and she kept assuring me that the renovations would be done soon. But it's not somewhere I'm comfortable placing my relative.
Read moreWe did not have the best experience at Carolina Gardens. The food was not very good and staff were not the most friendly. There was a lot of turnover and they just seemed to do the bare minimum. Based on our experience I would not recommend.

We toured Carolina Gardens at Kathwood, and my mom loved it. It was probably her favorite. We had certain things that were more important to us than other things. One of them was my mom just wants to feel like she's going to feel like family with whoever she's there with and whoever is caring for her, and they immediately made us feel that way. The rooms were really nice and well taken care of. They have pets in a little courtyard that just really won my mom over, and I thought that was really cute. I like the fact that they have one flat fee price. You don't have to worry about changing prices based on your level of care. It's one flat fee, no matter what level of care you have. The staff was great, and she did a really good job of explaining everything to us and taking her time and not rushing us. She answered all of our questions very well and definitely put my mom at ease.

It is sad to write a poor review of a facility that took care of your loved one for quite a few years. Carolina Gardens at Kathwood has so much potential and some nice, caring people on staff (the kitchen staff are apparently long time and fabulous) but the place has been a mess.Over the years, they have been sold two, three or more times. The elevator is broken so often that it is expected to see one or both out of commission when you show up.The grounds are nice and the facility is well kept and attractive. The level of care at times was very poor. The turnover of leadership staff seemed constant. You simply can't be first class under those conditions.
